The DeKalb County Solicitor-General’s Office continued its dedication to community engagement as members of the Victim Advocate Unit participated in Coffee With a Cop event at both the South Precinct and East Precinct in November. These gatherings brought together residents, law enforcement partners, and county staff for open, informal conversations designed to strengthen trust and accessibility.
It was truly “a latte good conversations” as the Victim Advocate Unit, joined by law enforcement partners and community members, “brewed up some great dialogue with our friends in blue.” The lighthearted atmosphere made space for meaningful discussion and community connection.
Brenda Puebla, Director of Victim Services and Victim Witness Advocates, attended both events alongside the team, sharing why these opportunities matter for survivors, the public, and the justice system.
“Events like Coffee With a Cop help the public feel more comfortable approaching our office and our law enforcement partners,” said Puebla. “When people see us as real, approachable individuals, it becomes easier for them to ask questions, seek help, and connect to resources when they need them most.”
About the Victim-Witness Advocate Program:
The Victim-Witness Advocate Program within the Solicitor-General’s Office is staffed by Director of Victim Services and Victim Witness Advocates Brenda Puebla and a dedicated team of victim-witness advocates.
The official role of the advocate is to be the voice of the victim. While not investigators or factfinders, advocates play a crucial part in bridging the gap between victims and the criminal justice system. Their purpose is to guide victims through the process, ensure their rights are protected, and connect them to available resources.
Advocates review and assess all victim-related cases, serving as the first point of contact for individuals seeking support from the office. They are also the initial assessors for identifying higher-risk cases, ensuring that those who need urgent assistance are connected with services quickly and compassionately.
Strengthening Trust Through Visibility:
The Coffee With a Cop event gave the Victim Advocate Unit the opportunity to meet community members outside of crisis situations, allowing for conversations rooted in trust, education, and community safety.
Solicitor-General Donna Coleman-Stribling, a long-standing supporter of community-centered initiatives, emphasized the importance of active engagement.
“Being visible and present in the community is essential to the work we do,” said Solicitor-General Coleman-Stribling. “Connections built through events like Coffee With a Cop strengthen public trust and support the safety and well-being of all who call DeKalb home.”
The gatherings at the South and East Precincts underscore the office’s ongoing effort to promote transparency, collaboration, and meaningful partnerships across DeKalb County. As the Victim Advocate Unit continues its outreach, the Solicitor-General’s Office remains committed in its mission to support survivors and build stronger, safer communities.
