Honoring Dr. Thomas L. Coleman

This Black History Month, the DeKalb County Solicitor-General’s Office proudly launched its Black History Makers series to honor the men and women whose lives of service helped make DeKalb County stronger and safer.

Our first honoree, Dr. Thomas L. Coleman, was scheduled to be recognized on February 1, 2026. Dr. Coleman, beloved father of Solicitor-General Donna Coleman-Stribling, passed away peacefully on January 31, just as the series began.

Dr. Coleman remained our premiere honoree.

A retired United States Air Force officer and Vietnam Veteran, Dr. Coleman dedicated more than 25 years to military service before continuing a lifetime of civic leadership across Georgia. His career included senior roles with the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, service as Chief of Staff to former DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis, leadership with the DeKalb County Housing Authority, and board service with Georgia Piedmont Technical College. He also chaired the 4th Congressional District Congressional Black Caucus Scholarship Committee and served on countless boards advancing education, youth development, housing, and public safety.

His legacy of service earned wide recognition, including DeKalb County History Maker honors, a Lifetime Achievement Award during the administration of President Joe Biden, the Nathaniel Mosby Humanitarian Award, and being named a “Beacon of Light” by Congressman Hank Johnson.

Those who gathered to celebrate his life at Saint Philip AME Church heard powerful tributes from his children and loved ones, speaking of a man known as “the officer and a gentleman”: a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, educator, and advocate who never turned away from helping others.

Dr. Coleman’s children shared:

“Our father lived a life defined by service, integrity, and love for his family and community. Any good we have been able to do in this world is a reflection of his guidance, sacrifice, and example.”

As we observe Black History Month, we honor Dr. Thomas L. Coleman not only for his titles and accomplishments, but for the lives he touched, the doors he opened, and the legacy of compassion and leadership he leaves behind.

🖤 Thank you, Dr. Coleman. Job well done. Your memory is truly a blessing.
