Program provides fathers with unique opportunity to connect with their daughters
DECATUR, Ga. (May 2, 2018) – The DeKalb County Solicitor-General, Donna Coleman-Stribling, is partnering with Men Stopping Violence (MSV) and Peace Baptist Church to host Because We Have Daughters® on Saturday, June 9, at Peace Baptist Church, beginning at 9 a.m.
MSV created the Because We Have Daughters® initiative in 2005 to give men an opportunity to deepen their bonds with their daughters. The program is based on seven core values:
Awareness and understanding of societal pressures girls and women face.
- Active listening
- Value girls’ voices
- Awareness of space
- Assertiveness, not aggression
- Appreciation for non-traditional qualities
- Stand up for what we learn together
Because We Have Daughters® gives fathers a unique opportunity to learn about the realities their daughters may face day-to-day by participating in fun and educational activities. Each activity is followed by discussions focused on the insights each party gained from the activity. MSV designed the program to help men better understand what their daughters – and women everywhere – are facing in today’s society.
“I learned about this program after a member of my team participated in the initiative. It had such an impact on their family, we felt it was vital to give the opportunity to families in DeKalb County,” said Solicitor-General Coleman-Stribling. “Creating a safe space for fathers to strength their bond with their daughter, isn’t only beneficial to these individual families, but also benefits our community. Our goal in my office is to create a better and safer DeKalb. Strengthening family bonds is one way we do that.”
Fathers interested in participating in the upcoming session must register at https://dekalbfatherdaughter.eventbrite.com by Friday, June 1, 2018. It is free and open to the public. Space is limited. The session is expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Participants should come prepared for a half-day session with lunch provided.
Executive director of MSV acknowledged the importance of partnering with community leaders, like Solicitor-General Coleman-Stribling, to host different sessions of Because We Have Daughters®, “Our goal is to give every man this opportunity to grow and learn from the young women in their lives. By having community partners train their team and facilitate sessions of Because We Have Daughters®, we’re able to exceed our expectations of the program.”
